I don’t have time for complicated skincare. I don’t enjoy long routines. Most nights, I want to
cleanse my face and go to sleep.
For years, my skincare was reactive. My skin would look dull or tired, I’d buy something new, feel
hopeful for a week, then end up back where I started.
I’ve tried lots of different brands over the years. Some were fine. Some did very little. What
eventually changed my skin wasn’t a miracle product. It was finding a routine that worked for my
skin and sticking to it. What works for me won’t work for everyone.
The issues I was dealing with
Under-eye darkness. Dull, uneven tone. Makeup sitting badly. Looking tired even on good days.
This wasn’t bad skin. It was stress, hormones, broken sleep, and getting older. Once I stopped
fighting that and focused on supporting my skin properly, things became much simpler.
Hydrating serum
Hydration helps draw water into the skin and keep it there. When skin is dehydrated, it looks dull
and makeup sits badly. This step alone made my skin look fresher.
What worked best for me: Medik8 Hydr8 B5. Budget alternative. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid
2% + B5.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C helps brighten skin, even tone, and protect against daily environmental stress. It gives
visible results when used consistently in the morning.
What I use: Medik8 C-Tetra. Budget alternative. The Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside 12%.
Retinoid
Retinoids support skin renewal and collagen over time. They help with texture, fine lines, and
overall skin quality. This is a long-term product rather than a quick fix.
What I use: Medik8 Crystal Retinal. Budget alternative. The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2%.
BHA exfoliant
BHA exfoliates inside the pore to help with congestion and texture. Used occasionally, it helps
other products work better.
What I use: Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid. Budget alternative. The Inkey List Beta Hydroxy
Acid.
Night moisturiser
A good night cream supports the skin barrier and helps the skin recover overnight, especially as
skin matures.
What I use: Medik8 Advanced Night Restore. Budget alternative. CeraVe PM Facial Moisturising Lotion
My actual busy mum routine
Morning: Cleanse. Vitamin C. Hydrating serum. Moisturiser. SPF.
Evening: Cleanse. Hydrating serum. Retinoid a few nights a week. BHA once a week. Night
moisturiser.
Final note
Skincare is personal. Skin type, sensitivity, hormones, lifestyle, and budget all play a part. I’ve shared what worked for me after trying many brands, but everyone’s skin is different - the best routine is the one that works for you.
